What is Venous ablation?

Venous ablation uses radiofrequency or laser energy to burn (ablate) and close varicose veins. Venous ablation is used to ease symptoms of varicose veins such as pain, swelling, and irritation.
Varicose veins are abnormally large veins that appear dark purple or blue in color often seen in the legs. A varicose vein is caused by valves that are not working properly. These defective valves cause blood to pool in the veins causing the veins to enlarge.
How does it work?
Your doctor will first apply a numbing cream to the treatment area to reduce discomfort. Your doctor will also numb the area where the catheter will be inserted into the varicose vein with a local anesthetic.
An ultrasound transducer will be used to study and visualize the varicose vein and track its path. A very small skin incision will be made and a tiny electrode is moved to the desired location within the vein through the incision.
Your doctor will then inject local anesthesia into the tissues around the varicose vein to collapse it around the electrode and act as insulation for the radiofrequency or laser heat. The radiofrequency energy heats the tissues and causes the vein to close. The varicose veins will then shrink and scar down following the procedure.
How long does it take to heal from vein ablation?
The treated veins should be successfully closed within a week. Most of the treated veins become invisible in about 12 months. It typically takes 1-2 weeks to completely heal from vein ablation.
